Legacy. Service. Gear Up Surplus.
Gear Up Surplus was founded on military heritage, family values, and a commitment to service. What began as a traditional surplus operation rooted in Texas has evolved into a focused, nationwide online outfitter serving those who value authenticity, preparedness, and integrity.
While the storefront chapter has closed, the mission continues — stronger, leaner, and positioned for long-term impact.

Our Roots
Gear Up’s foundation traces back to Charley Smien, who owned and operated multiple military surplus stores in the Fort Hood area. A respected businessman and community figure, Charley built his stores on relationships, fairness, and service.
His daughter, Lela Smien Hatoum, carried that tradition forward — honoring a family legacy shaped by military service spanning World War I and World War II.
The values that defined those early stores — integrity, community engagement, and respect for service — remain the backbone of Gear Up today.

A New Chapter
In December 2018, Amer Hatoum — son of Lela and grandson of Charley — took over Gear Up Surplus with a vision to modernize the brand while preserving its legacy.
Over the years, Gear Up expanded its presence in Florida’s Space Coast and strengthened its position in the military surplus, tactical gear, and preparedness markets.
In 2026, the company transitioned to a streamlined online model — allowing Gear Up to serve customers nationwide with greater efficiency, focus, and sustainability.
This evolution reflects a commitment not just to growth, but to longevity.
Who We Serve
Gear Up has always proudly supported:
- Active-duty and retired military
- Law enforcement and first responders
- Security professionals
- JROTC and Sea Cadets
- Outdoor enthusiasts, campers, and preparedness-minded individuals
While military surplus remains at our core, our product offerings continue to reflect the needs of today’s tactical, security, and outdoor communities.
Investing in the Next Generation
As part of our commitment to service and community, Gear Up Surplus established the Cadet of Excellence Scholarship to recognize outstanding local JROTC students who demonstrate leadership, discipline, and service.
By investing directly in the next generation of leaders, we continue the values that shaped this company from the beginning — honor, responsibility, and commitment to community.

Looking Forward
The next chapter of Gear Up is focused, intentional, and built for sustainability.
As an online outfitter rooted in legacy and service, we remain committed to authenticity, integrity, and long-term impact.
Thank you for supporting a family-built business grounded in heritage and dedicated to those who serve.
